Why Patients Are Concerned
If you’re planning to conceive or are currently pregnant, it’s natural to ask, “Does Mounjaro affect fertility or pregnancy?” At PPRX, we receive this question often from both men and women using tirzepatide for weight loss or diabetes. Understanding the risks is key before continuing or starting treatment.
Is Mounjaro Safe in Pregnancy?
Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is not recommended during pregnancy. It hasn’t been tested in pregnant women, and animal studies have shown potential harm to fetal development. The NHS and pharmaceutical guidelines suggest stopping Mounjaro at least one month before trying to conceive. If you become pregnant while taking it, stop use immediately and speak to your GP or midwife.
Does Mounjaro Affect Fertility in Women?
There is no direct evidence that Mounjaro harms female fertility. However, by improving insulin resistance, regulating blood sugar, and supporting weight loss, Mounjaro may actually help restore ovulation in women with PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome). This can increase fertility, even if you weren’t expecting it. If you’re sexually active and not using contraception, you could become pregnant more easily than before.
Does Mounjaro Affect Male Fertility?
There is no known impact on sperm quality or male fertility in clinical data. However, the weight loss and improved metabolic health that Mounjaro supports may boost testosterone levels and reproductive health in overweight or insulin-resistant men.
Can You Breastfeed on Mounjaro?
No. Mounjaro is not approved for use during breastfeeding. It is unknown whether tirzepatide passes into breast milk or affects infant growth. For safety, you should stop Mounjaro and wait until breastfeeding is complete before resuming treatment.
When to Stop Mounjaro If Trying to Conceive
The manufacturer recommends stopping Mounjaro at least 4 weeks before attempting pregnancy. This allows the drug to clear from your system, as it has a long half-life and can remain in your body for weeks.
What If You Accidentally Take Mounjaro While Pregnant?
If you took Mounjaro before knowing you were pregnant, don’t panic. Speak to your GP or midwife as soon as possible. They may monitor your pregnancy more closely, but many women go on to have healthy pregnancies after unintentional early exposure.
