Selsun Dandruff Treatment is a medicated shampoo used to treat dandruff and seborrhoea dermatitis. It combats dandruff by reducing greasiness of the scalp and slowing down growth of the layer of skin cells on the scalp that cause dandruff.
The active ingredient, selenium sulphide, specifically destroys a certain type of fungus called dermatophyte. It also causes a decrease in the production of cells in the top layer of skin, as well as the amount of natural oil (sebum) produced by the sebaceous glands in the skin.
Seborrhoeic dermatitis is an inflammatory scaling skin condition, which can affect the scalp. Inflammation is caused by the body’s reaction to the presence of a particular type of fungus, and to products that break down oil.
Selenium sulphide therefore kills the fungi responsible for causing this inflammation, as well as controls the itching and scaling associated with dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis of the scalp.
Instructions
Adults (including the elderly) and children over 5 years: thoroughly wet hair and massage the shampoo into the scalp to form a lather. Rinse after 2-3 minutes. Use twice a week for the first two weeks. After this initial course of treatment, not to be used more often than necessary to control the condition. Under 5 years: not recommended.
Cautions
Do not use Selsun if you are allergic to any of the ingredients; you are in the first three months of pregnancy or if you are breastfeeding, as the safety of Selsun in pregnancy and its effect on breast milk are unknown; or on children under 5 years old. Selsun should be applied to the scalp, it is not a medicine and must not be swallowed.
You should avoid getting Selsun in your eyes or letting it come into contact with broken skin or inflamed areas. Selsun should be thoroughly rinsed from the hair before dyeing, tinting or perming. It should not be used for two days before or after any of these hair treatments. Take out hairgrips and remove jewellery. Avoid contact with metal surfaces. Selsun can rarely cause problems such as itching and redness of the skin and scalp.
If this occurs, stop using. Increased hair loss may occur when using Selsun. Dryness or greasiness of the hair or scalp may increase after using Selsun. Discoloration of the hair may occur when using Selsun. This can be avoided or minimised by thorough rinsing of the hair after treatment. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you notice any other unwanted effects not mentioned above. If Selsun is accidentally swallowed, seek medical advice immediately. Swallowing Selsun can cause nausea and vomiting. Do not use after its use-by date which is printed on the bottle.
If the bottle is out of date, return it to your pharmacist and, if necessary, get a new prescription from your doctor. Keep your bottle in a safe place, where children cannot reach it. Do not store above 25ºC. If you have any questions, ask your pharmacist or doctor
