Ibuprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, more popularly known under the brand name ‘Nurofen’. It is commonly used to treat inflammation such as sprains but can also be used to treat mild pain symptoms seen in toothaches and more severe pain from arthritis. As it is an over-the-counter medication, it is available to buy from most pharmacies and supermarkets.
Mode of action
The mode of action is to reduce the pain pathways sent to the brain, more specifically it blocks the enzyme that produces prostaglandins. These hormone-like substances work in our favour when in they are at normal levels by healing tissues and forming and then breaking down blood clots to prevent bleeding. But higher levels can cause excessive inflammation and too low levels can also cause health complications such as stomach ulcers and pulmonary hypertension. When tissues in the body are inflamed there are higher concentrations of prostaglandins which is why doctors recommend anti-inflammatory medications like Ibuprofen to reduce its effects.
Paracetamol and Ibuprofen
Paracetamol is often used alongside Ibuprofen but it’s important to note that although they are both used for pain relief, paracetamol does not reduce inflammation. So, although they can be safely used together, Paracetamol is the better choice when there is a fever in conjunction with pain such as in colds and flus.
Where to buy Ibuprofen
Ibuprofen is available at PPRX in tablet form, capsules, or liquid. We also have popular gels like Voltarol that you can rub into the skin. It takes between 20 and 30 minutes when taken by mouth and 1 to 2 days on the skin.
Tablets, capsules and liquids should not be taken on an empty stomach or for longer than 10 days without a doctor’s supervision. Topical ibuprofen should not be used for longer than 2 weeks.
Ibuprofen is not usually recommended during pregnancy due to the effects on the baby’s circulation and kidneys, therefore always talk to a doctor or pharmacist before taking Ibuprofen.
